OUR FACULTY

Berkeley City Ballet maintains a staff of seasoned dance professionals. Each staff member combines technical expertise, professional experience and teaching skills to offer quality training and personal encouragement to students of all levels and abilities.

The faculty is supported by an administrative staff, board of directors and parent volunteers—all committed to providing the highest quality dance education to every student at every level.

Artistic Director:
Elizabeth Godfrey began studying ballet when she was 6 years old at the Centre de Danse Classique in Mons, Belgium. At 16, she entered the Municipal Institute for Ballet in Antwerp, Belgium, where she trained professionally as well as competed internationally and was a semi-finalist at the 1980 Prix de Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland. Her professional career encompasses dancing with both classical and contemporary companies that include the Royal Ballet of Flanders (Antwerp, Belgium), the Dayton Ballet Company (Dayton, OH), the Claudia Murphey Dance Company (Fairfax, VA), and the Daniel West Dancers (Washington, DC). Ms. Godfrey has taught dance for over 20 years. She was on faculty at The Washington School of the Ballet (Washington, DC) for six years. She also served for seven years as the Director of Dance at the Holton-Arms Center of the Arts (Bethesda, MD). Ms. Godfrey has taught at BCB since 1999 after relocating to the Bay Area. She began her term as Artistic Director of Berkeley City Ballet in the year 2000. She has studied at Columbia University and holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Work form the University of Maryland.

Associate Artistic Director:
Alexis Drabek began her training in Littleton, Colorado at the Belliston Academy of Ballet. At age 16, she attended the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, and later went on to receive a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Juilliard School in New York City. After graduating, Alexis danced with Kim Robards Dance and David Taylor Dance Theater in Denver, Colorado while teaching dance throughout the state. She has returned to Interlochen for three summers to teach ballet and modern. Since moving to the Bay Area in 2003, Alexis has danced with the Oakland Ballet, Diablo Ballet, and is currently performing with Company C Contemporary Ballet in Walnut Creek. Alexis has been on faculty at BCB for three years and was named Associate Artistic Director in 2006.

Teachers:

Melinda Buhl was born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she started her training with Gisela Genshow at the Santa Fe Dance Foundation now the Official School of the Santa Fe Aspen Ballet. She has also spent summers training with Dance Aspen and the Official School of the Milwaukee Ballet. Ms. Buhl attended the University of California at Irvine, receiving a BA in dance and a minor in education in June 2002.

Amanda Whitehead trained in ballet at The Washington School of Ballet and danced with The Washington Ballet from 1994 to 1996. She studied modern dance, hip-hop, and musical theater while completing her bachelor's degree in Spanish at Princeton University, and she was the choreographer for the drama program at The Pennington School in Pennington, NJ, from 1997 to 2006. She is passionate about drawing out the particular joys and talents in the dancing of students of all abilities.
